FCTE models company formation, ownership, size, sector and operating status for over a million synthetic businesses — the same businesses that employ citizens, contract to build the city and own the land it sits on.

Every business row connects back to a real ward, a real owner (domestic or foreign), and — where linked — a real Employer with real workers. What it does not yet do is pretend to be more mature than it is: several genuine gaps are disclosed below, not hidden.

FCTE Business represents company formation, ownership and operating status for the enterprises that anchor the wider city economy — most of them small, most of them owned by an ordinary citizen.

BusinessCode, BusinessName, a 16-value canonical sector category and one of 7 legal forms (BusinessType) — assigned a RegistrationDate anywhere from 1940 to 2026.

Owned by a domestic citizen (domestic-owner identity), a resident foreign investor (foreign-investor identity), or left unowned for STATE_OWNED / NGO forms — with a disclosed per-owner concentration cap.

MICRO through ENTERPRISE (BusinessSize), with workforce count and a modeled Revenue banded by sector and size tier.

ACTIVE, DORMANT, SUSPENDED or LIQUIDATED — including businesses that close because their owner died (a real, wired lifecycle event, not just a status flag).

16 canonical sectors, shared jurisdiction-agnostically, crosswalked to Lagos's own Employment sector vocabulary via SectorCrosswalk.

The same Business row can be referenced elsewhere as an Employer, a building contractor or a landowner — one identity, several real roles.

Every Business row is marked IsRegistered = 1 today — 100%, Lagos. This table does not represent the informal, unregistered economy; genuinely informal self-employment is modeled separately in Employment's SelfEmployment and InformalCluster tables, not here. Business models registered company formation, not street-level informal trade.

Formation and ownership are genuinely modeled and temporally consistent. Day-to-day business change — growth, contraction, a voluntary wind-down unrelated to the owner — is not yet part of this engine, and this page says so rather than implying otherwise.

What is represented: Registration timing, operating status and ownership chronology are represented across the historical release. Public certification verifies lifecycle consistency; exact status probabilities, sampling dates, assignment steps and regression-guard design remain controlled.

What's planned, not modeled: organic growth or contraction in workforce count/Revenue over a business's own history, voluntary closure or bankruptcy independent of owner death, and re-registration after closure are not currently generated. A business's size and status today are effectively a snapshot taken once, not a lived history.

  • Foreign-investor community composition is led by Chinese, Lebanese and British residents in the populated ownership pool.
  • 0.93% of Lagos businesses are foreign-national-owned in the current generated release.
  • City-specific ownership patterns are calibrated to documented historical context; exact reweighting parameters remain controlled.
  • Business geography is ward-specific; Ifako, Eti-Osa-Central and Iyana-Ipaja are among the high-count Lagos wards represented in the release.

Business volume, registration timing and ownership eligibility are calibrated to city context and resident lifecycle constraints. Public pages expose the resulting distributions and certification outcomes; exact sizing ratios, sampling strategy, assignment sequence and guard design remain controlled.

The 1940–2026 generation epoch, verified live via MIN/MAX(RegistrationDate). CAC/NBS 2023 Lagos State Business Survey size mix (55/30/10/4/1).

Per-sector revenue-per-employee bands, derived from the sector/size assignment rather than independently sourced.

Business formation, sector mix, size class, ownership and registration timing are calibrated to cited city evidence and release-level realism checks. Exact weights and assignment logic remain controlled.

Individual synthetic assignments are generated under controlled domain rules. Exact sampling, assignment order and parameterization are not published.

Read the published detail

The one enterprise-tier business previously flagged outside the expected workforce-size band was traced to a deliberately-modeled historical state-contractor anchor record, not a generation method defect — the certification check has been updated with a named, disclosed exception rather than the underlying data being changed.

A per-owner business-ownership cap was found exceeded on both City Twins (a small number of synthetic citizens were linked to well over the intended maximum of 5 businesses each). A permanent enforcement step has been written and wired into the standard generation workflow so it runs on every future generation cycle; remediation of the existing release data is in progress.

Sector, size and legal-form composition still relies on a shared core calibration profile more than ideal city-specific differentiation. Public outcomes are disclosed; the underlying weight table and generation model parameters are not.

Business workforce context and Employment-domain headcount are not yet fully reconciled for every linked entity. The cross-domain relationship exists, but the two independently modeled measures are not certified as identical.

Some linked construction/business histories can violate intuitive ordering in the current release. The issue is disclosed as a temporal-certification gap without publishing exact record counts, identifiers or repair logic.

Several registered relationships into Insurance, Finance and Health remain unpopulated in the current release. They are treated as planned/registered interfaces, not functioning data paths.

Business status and size do not yet evolve through a fully endogenous growth/contraction model. Lifecycle change is limited to explicitly implemented events; exact generation-time assignment logic is controlled.

No synthetic business corresponds to a real company. Business names, owners and financials are statistically generated, not drawn from a real companies registry.
